Quelle Surprise! Emily in Paris is Quite… Good???
A lifelong sceptic of anything popular, I had avoided watching Emily in Paris like the plague. I finally cracked after seeing season 3 advertised and actually, it’s not that bad!
It’s cheesy, camp, and the definition of light entertainment, but it’s knowingly so, wincing along with us at the world of vacuous social media influencers and the materialistic lives they pursue.
Paris is the real star of the show though and it’s worth watching for this alone. It’s beautifully made with lots of external shots featuring the spots we all know and love.
Here’s what surprised me most about Emily in Paris…
Emily is a nepo baby
Lily Collins is Phil Collins’ daughter?! Not sure what else to say about that, apart from it’s.. puzzling.
Emily has terrible dress sense
This girl is an influencer?? What are these outfits. In season 1 she wears the most horrendous, clashing clothes. I’m guessing the point is that she gets more stylish the longer she stays in Paris. I don’t know, I haven’t got that far..
Emily is *very* promiscuous
Initially a predictably prudish WASP type, she is entranced by the City of Love, swooning over almost every man she meets. When she ‘accidentally’ beds a 17 year old, his mother’s only concern seems to be that he’s a good lover! Mon dieu!
Emily in Paris is funny (sometimes)
Perturbed by Emily’s American timekeeping and efficiency, Luc played by Bruno Gouery is another highlight of the show. Awkward and lanky with grey flyaway hair, he’s the last person you’d expect to work in a polished Parisian PR agency.
Overall this fish out of water story is an endearing tale of two very different cultures clashing, with a lovable heroine. It’s hardly ground breaking TV but it had me at ‘bonjour’! 💐
